The foreword of the Big Book opens with this sentence,'We, of Alcoholics Anonymous, are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body.
To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book.' Those who use the term 'recovered' do so because they see themselves as having recovered from alcoholism for the one day in which they find themselves.
The word 'recovered' in this sense is not interchangeable with the word 'cured.' There is no known cure for the disease of alcoholism.
