What is Collision Insurance

The term "collision insurance" can mean a number of things nowadays, from very basic repair coverage through more comprehensive packages to take care of your health and that of the other driver as well. Needless to say, having more coverage will generally translate into lower bills following an accident; though this is by no means true all of the time. Depending on your carrier and its standard of integrity, you may be in for an uphill battle as you file those claims.

The key to collecting on any auto insurance policy is to stay ahead of the details immediately following the accident. Get a copy of the police report and take photographs of the site, then be sure to retain copies of medical bills, repair estimates and everything else that comes your way. Covering all your bases is the surest way to make a compelling case when it comes time to speak with your auto insurance agent.

Of course you can have all your ducks in a row and still find that claim rejected, which is why so many people recommend working with a higher standard of care. Although the Web these days is rife with independent lenders who are eager to underwrite specious policies, it's generally wiser stick with major national companies whose customer care has earned a sterling reputation for integrity. Not all insurance policies are created equal, even if the figures appear to match up down the line.

Generally the collision insurance you own will tend to vary in size and scope depending on how much you pay. Drivers with spotty records often have to pay more for comparable coverage, meaning each successive claim will generally raise their monthly payments and deductible in lockstep. File too many within a given period of time ? usually about a year ? and you may find the company has earmarked you for non-renewal.

It pays to be smart with collision insurance, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't file legitimate claims when the damage is extensive. Depending on your state's policy on no-fault claims and other details, you may be owed a significant sum for your troubles. The right insurance company should have the funds in your hands within a matter of weeks.
