Chocolate Addiction

Chocolate has been used to self-medicate our low moods.  Because of this pseudo-elevating effect, it was once known as the food of the gods.  It is derived from cocoa beans which are fermented to rid them of their bitterness.  They are then dried, cleaned and roasted to develop color, flavor and aroma.  Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, known for causing emotional highs and lows associated with mood swings, love, pleasure, and indulgence.  Chocolate also contains the chemical theobromine, which triggers the release of endorphins in the brain and works as a natural antidepressant.  But in the long run this chemical, with continued  intake,  will  probably  deplete endorphins and will not lead to their restoration.  So many drugs that enter into the addiction model, although they temporarily release good medicine into the brain, will result in depletion because they do not rebuild.  Chocolate is another fermented food and therefore falls in the same category with alcohol and other fermented products which often have negative affects on brain health.  Chocolate addiction can be treated like other addictions, with natural techniques such as Cranial Electrical Stimulation and amino acids or drug techniques including anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and any other medications that will affect craving behavior.
