specific

(1) Relating to a particular one, or a small group of things. A specific drug, inhibitor, etc., is one that performs exclusively, or almost exclusively, the function described. 'Specific' binding of a substance in a tissue is binding to a receptor that is selective, usually with high affinity, for that substance. 'Specific' also may relate specifically to a biological species (e.g. a 'specific name'). (2) A parameter that characterises a property of a substance or tissue, irrespective of how much is actually present. 'Specific membrane resistance' is the resistance of unit area of membrane (in ohm.m2), and 'specific conductance' the resistance per unit area (in mho.m-2).
